Door tientallen jaren onderzoek weten we wat nodig is om type 1 diabetes te genezen. Dat komt doordat wetenschappers steeds meer ontdekten over hoe de ziekte ontstaat. In de alvleesklier zitten b\u00e8tacellen. Deze cellen maken insuline. Bij type 1 diabetes geven de b\u00e8tacellen een eiwit af dat het lichaam niet accepteert. Het afweersysteem ziet dit eiwit als niet lichaamseigen. Daarom maakt het de b\u00e8tacellen kapot met als gevolg dat het lichaam geen insuline meer kan aanmaken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">Om type 1 diabetes te genezen moet die afweerreactie gestopt worden. Wetenschappers ontwikkelen methodes om te zorgen dat het afweersysteem de b\u00e8tacellen met rust laat. Alleen dan heeft het nut om de b\u00e8tacellen van iemand met type 1 te herstellen of te vervangen. Ook naar herstel en vervanging van b\u00e8tacellen doen wetenschappers veel onderzoek.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex
