Maar dat is niet de oorzaak van de ziekte. Die ligt bij de b\u00e8tacellen zelf, zo ontdekten wetenschappers nog maar een paar jaar geleden. De b\u00e8tacellen krijgen stress en maken daarom een foutief eiwit aan. Het afweersysteem accepteert dit eiwit niet en zet de auto-immuunaanval in. Hoe kan stress in de b\u00e8tacellen worden voorkomen? Onderzoekers ontleden daarom de b\u00e8tacel. Ze kijken in welk stuk van de cel stress ontstaat. En welke eiwitten de b\u00e8tacel daarna aanmaakt. Die eiwitten zorgen namelijk dat de b\u00e8tacellen ineens gezien worden als niet-lichaamseigen door het afweersysteem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">Ook doen wetenschappers specifiek onderzoek naar medicijnen die stress in de b\u00e8tacellen kunnen voorkomen. Dit kan een nieuw medicijn zijn, maar wetenschappers kijken ook naar bestaande medicijnen voor andere ziekten. Op dit gebied werken wetenschappers uit verschillende vakgebieden met steun van Breakthrough T1D samen. Het gebruik van bestaande medicijnen is een groot voordeel, want die medicijnen zijn vaak al uitgebreid getest op veiligheid. Daarom kunnen wetenschappers een medicijn sneller uitproberen bij mensen met type 1 diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"betacellen-van-een-donor\">Nieuwe afstoting voorkomen<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">Maar de celstress aanpakken blijft ingewikkeld. De stress in de b\u00e8tacellen ontstaat al ruim voordat iemand de diagnose type 1 diabetes krijgt. Daarom is het van belang dat wetenschappers de ziekte eerder op kunnen sporen. Nu komen kinderen en jongeren vaak met een extreem hoge bloedglucose in het ziekenhuis. De diagnose type 1 diabetes is dan definitief. Wetenschappers ontwikkelen betere manieren om mensen te screenen op stoffen die kunnen wijzen op type 1 diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">Breakthrough T1D investeerde eerder al in onderzoek dat aantoonde dat twee specifieke auto-antistoffen in het bloed wijzen op type 1 diabetes. Heeft iemand deze twee auto-antistoffen allebei? Dan is de kans bijna 100% dat iemand type 1 diabetes krijgt.
