Om deze verwoestende ziekte de wereld uit te helpen is wetenschappelijk onderzoek nodig. Breakthrough T1D is toonaangevend in het verbinden van wetenschappers wereldwijd om met elkaar oplossingen te vinden voor type 1 diabetes. Dat komt doordat de b\u00e8tacellen een eiwit afgeven dat door het afweersysteem van het lichaam niet wordt geaccepteerd. Het afweersysteem maakt de b\u00e8tacellen kapot met als gevolg dat het lichaam uiteindelijk geen insuline meer kan aanmaken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insuline is nodig om glucose in bloed om te zetten in energie. Zonder insuline krijgt het lichaam te weinig energie om dingen te doen. Bovendien stijgt de hoeveelheid glucose in het bloed als er geen insuline is. Mensen met type 1 diabetes moeten daarom zelf insuline toedienen om hun bloedglucosewaarden in evenwicht te houden. De dagelijkse impact en de lichamelijke gevolgen van langdurig vari\u00ebrende bloedglucosewaarden zijn groot. Onderzoek naar complicaties en psychische aandoeningen staan vaak los van type 1 diabetes. Met financiering van Breakthrough T1D zoeken wetenschappers oplossingen voor de impact die type 1 diabetes heeft op het leven. Wetenschappers richten zich wereldwijd op mogelijkheden om b\u00e8tacellen te maken en deze goed in het lichaam te brengen. Dit kan niet zomaar: getransplanteerde cellen moeten beschermd worden tegen de auto-immuunaanval van het lichaam.
