Met hun Progenitor Cel Activatie (PCA) programma veranderen zij darmstamcellen met behulp van kleine signaalmoleculen in cellen die kapot zijn gegaan in het lichaam. Zij gebruiken hiervoor stamcellen uit de darm en het oor, waarmee zij tal van degeneratieve aandoeningen proberen te genezen. Zij focussen zich met name op het herstellen van het gehoor, maar dankzij de nieuwe samenwerking met het Breakthrough T1D zullen zij zich ook gaan richten op het produceren van b\u00e8tacellen.<\/p>\n<p>De b\u00e8tacellen zullen gemaakt worden van stamcellen uit de darm. Deze zogenoemde lgr5+ progenitorcellen kunnen nog veranderen in verschillende celtypes. Waarin zij veranderen is afhankelijk van signalen die zij ontvangen vanuit hun omgeving, de stamcel niche. <em>Frequency therapeutics <\/em>gaat met de grant van het Breakthrough T1D onderzoek doen naar het stimuleren van deze stamcellen om ze uiteindelijk te veranderen in insuline producerende cellen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe zijn erg enthousiast over de mogelijkheid van het veranderen van adulte stamcellen uit de darm in insuline producerende cellen met behulp van kleine signaalmoleculen. Dit zou een belangrijke stap kunnen zijn in het ontwikkelen van een succesvolle methode om b\u00e8tacellen te vervangen bij mensen met Type 1 Diabetes\u201d, aldus Esther Latres, research director bij het Breakthrough T1D. \u201cDit kan ons helpen bij het overwinnen van grote obstakels omtrent b\u00e8tacelregeneratie, bijvoorbeeld de schaarste van humane b\u00e8tacellen.
