Het is de eerste keer dat gezonde b\u00e8tacellen zijn geproduceerd in een lab en experts zeggen dat de ontwikkeling kan leiden tot een toekomstige behandeling of zelfs genezing. Professor Chris Liddle, die het onderzoeksteam van het Salk Institute in San Diego, Californi\u00eb leidde, zei: &#8220;Het is nogal een grote doorbraak. Deze ontdekking zal ons mogelijk in staat stellen om onbeperkt leveringen te produceren van te transplanteren cellen afkomstig van de eigen stamcellen van de pati\u00ebnt.&#8221;\n\nHet team transplanteerde de nieuwe b\u00e8tacellen in diabetische muizen en waren verrast te ontdekken dat de dieren al snel werden genezen van hun symptomen. Hoewel de studie slechts gedaan werd bij muizen, zou het hopelijk kunnen leiden tot een meer effectieve behandeling bij mensen.\n\nLiefdadigheidsinstellingen en onderzoeksinstellingen reageerden verheugd over het onderzoek. Dr. Emily Burns van Diabetes UK, zei: &#8220;Het lijkt op een heel innovatieve manier om insulineproducerende cellen uit de alvleesklier te produceren in het laboratorium en het opent interessante mogelijkheden voor de behandeling van type 1 diabetes in de toekomst.\n\nHet is nog in een vroeg stadium en we moeten nu afwachten of dit een veilige en effectieve aanpak bij mensen in de toekomst zou kunnen zijn.&#8221;\n\nProfessor Ronald Evans, directeur van het Gene Expression Laboratory van het Salk Institute, zei: &#8220;Dit werk brengt ons naar een nieuw tijdperk in het cre\u00ebren van functionele b\u00e8tacellen.&#8221;\n\nDe bevindingen, gerapporteerd in het tijdschrift Cell Metabolism, laten zien dat cellen in het lab bloedglucosespiegels verminderen naar een normale waarde. Prof. Evans voegde toe: \u201cb\u00e8tacellen moeten snel grote hoeveelheden insuline afscheiden om de bloedsuikerspiegel te controleren. Het is een zeer energie-intensief proces. &#8221; Wanneer de nieuwe humane beta cellen werden getransplanteerd in muizen met type 1 diabetes, regelden zij snel de bloedsuikerspiegel van de dieren naar niet-diabetische niveaus.
