Deze eiwitten voorkomen dat het afweersysteem per ongeluk lichaamseigen weefsel beschadigt.<\/p>\n<p>Deze ontdekking zou kunnen leiden tot nieuwe therapie\u00ebn voor bijvoorbeeld type 1 diabetes maar ook Multiple Sclerose. De therapie\u00ebn kunnen worden gericht op het stoppen van auto-immuunaanvallen, maar kunnen ook afstoting bij orgaantransplantaties voorkomen. Regulatoire T Immuuncellen, T-regs genaamd, voorkomen gewoonlijk immuunaanvallen die T1D en andere aandoeningen veroorzaken.<\/p>\n<p>Wetenschappers weten echter relatief weinig over hoe T-regs werken en waarom ze soms falen in hun functie. Voorgaand onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat chemokines immuuncellen naar ontstekingshaarden trekken. Hierdoor kunnen de T-regs ziekteverwekkers en andere gevaarlijke stoffen aanvallen. Dit is de eerste studie die onthult dat chemokines het immuunsysteem helpen om te voorkomen dat gezond weefsel wordt beschadigd. <br \/><\/p>\n<p>Het onderzoek is uitgevoerd door dr. Megan Levings, een onderzoeker die ondersteund wordt door Breakthrough T1D. Deze bevindingen zijn recent gepubliceerd in de Journal of Clinical Investigation.
