De bacterie, Lactococcus lactis genaamd, wordt normaal gebruikt bij de productie van kaas.<\/p>\n<p>ActoBio Therapeutics heeft de bacterie echter zo aangepast dat hij twee belangrijke stoffen meeneemt: interleukine-10 en proinsuline. Deze zorgen dat er meer regulatoire T-cellen worden aangemaakt. Die T-cellen zijn nodig om te voorkomen dat het immuunsysteem de b\u00e8tacellen verder aanvalt. Vermoed wordt dat type 1 diabetes genezen kan worden, als mensen in een vroeg stadium behandeld worden met de bacterie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minder bijwerkingen<\/strong><br \/>De bacterie is op zichzelf niet essentieel, maar een goede manier om de nodige stoffen lokaal af te geven in het lichaam. Hierdoor wordt de rest van het lichaam gespaard en ontstaan minder bijwerkingen bij deze mogelijke behandeling. Ook is deze methode waarschijnlijk kosteneffectief.<\/p>\n<p>De methode is reeds getest op muizen. Bij 60% van deze muizen verdween de type 1 diabetes. In combinatie met een antilichaam tegen de T-celreceptor, was dit percentage zelfs 89%.
