Zo meldt de Sacramento Bee positieve berichten vanuit het onderzoek naar transplantatie van b\u00e8tacellen. Een van de problemen bij transplantatie is dat de cellen de eerste dagen nog geen voedingsstoffen en zuurstof krijgen omdat bloedvaatjes in de alvleesklier tijd nodig hebben om contact te maken met het nieuwe weefsel. Als gevolg daarvan sterven nogal wat b\u00e8tacellen in deze eerste dagen, wat het effect van de transplantatie vermindert. Onderzoekers van het Diabetes Research Institute hebben nu een materiaal, PDMS-CaO2 ontwikkeld dat zuurstof genereert uit water en dat gedurende meer dan zes weken blijft doen.
