Bart Roep (LUMC) de <em>Breakthrough T1D Netherlands Award for T1D Scientific Excellence<\/em> toegekend. Deze prijs is voor het eerst uitgereikt aan een Nederlandse wetenschapper. Prof. dr. Roep ontvangt de onderscheiding als waardering voor zijn grote impact op het onderzoek naar het voorkomen en genezen van type 1 diabetes (T1D). Alexander Rinnooy Kan, die ambassadeur is van Breakthrough T1D Nederland en zelf type 1 diabetes heeft, reikte de prijs op 15 oktober uit.<br \/><br \/>Prof. dr. Bart Roep houdt zich al jaren intensief bezig met het vinden van een oplossing voor type 1 diabetes. Zijn onderzoek richt zich met name op het bijsturen van het afweersysteem, zodat het de b\u00e8tacellen, die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de insulineproductie, niet langer aanvalt. Ook onderzoekt Roep het opnieuw activeren van de b\u00e8tacellen. Een belangrijke doorbraak in het onderzoek was de ontdekking dat bij mensen met type 1 diabetes nog b\u00e8tacellen aanwezig zijn in het lichaam.<br \/><strong><br \/>Doorbraak dichtbij<\/strong><br \/>Volgens prof. dr. Bart Roep staat er dan ook veel te gebeuren op het gebied van diabetesonderzoek. &#8220;De toekomst voor mensen met type 1 is tegenwoordig zoveel rooskleuriger dan pakweg tien jaar geleden&#8221;, vertelt hij. &#8220;We zijn heel dicht bij een aantal grote doorbraken voor mensen met T1D.&#8221; <br \/><br \/>Hij vindt de onderscheiding dan ook waardevol. &#8220;Deze onderscheiding is vooral betekenisvol voor mij, omdat hij komt van een organisatie, en van mensen, uit de T1D-gemeenschap zelf. Daar doen we het tenslotte voor. Ik wil niet stoppen totdat type 1 diabetes genezen kan worden.&#8221;<br \/><strong><br \/>Belangrijk statement<\/strong><br \/>Maarten de Groot, voorzitter van het bestuur van Breakthrough T1D Nederland, vindt de toekenning zeer terecht. &#8220;Met deze award willen we onze diepe waardering uitspreken voor het baanbrekend onderzoek van prof. dr. Bart Roep.
