En dat gaat hard, tegen de tijd dat een kind 10 &#8211; 12 jaar wordt, is dit vermogen van beta cellen om zich te vermenigvuldigen, al zeer sterk verminderd. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat het lichaam steeds minder in staat is om zich te herstellen van de autoimmuun reactie tegen beta cellen, de oorzaak van Type 1 diabetes.\n\nHet Breakthrough T1D financiert reeds lange tijd fundamenteel onderzoek naar methoden om beta cellen weer te laten delen. Inmiddels verschijnen er veelbelovende resultaten: wetenschappers van Stanford University publiceren deze maand baanbrekend onderzoek in het toonaangevende tijdschrift Nature. Zij beschrijven op welke wijze de beta cellen hun delingsvermogen verliezen, welke cellulaire processen daarbij zijn betrokken en hoe het vermogen tot delen weer kan worden hersteld. Ook laten zij zien dat het in een diermodel gevonden mechanisme ook werkzaam is bij mensen.
