Het medicijn heeft een duale werking: het is een \u2018inhibitor\u2019 voor SGLT1 en SGLT2.\n\nHet SGLT1 deel zorgt ervoor dat glucose langzamer wordt opgenomen in het lichaam, waardoor bloedsuikerpieken verminderd of voorkomen kunnen worden. Het SGLT2 deel zorgt ervoor dat de nieren overtollige suikers beter kunnen afvoeren uit het lichaam.\n\nDe onderzoeken die tot nu toe hebben plaatsgevonden hebben aangetoond dat het medicijn zorgt voor een beter HbA1c zonder een verhoogd risico op ernstige hypo\u2019s. Er is echter ook gebleken dat het medicijn de kans op diabetische ketoacidose kan vergroten.
