Dankzij onderzoek, door Breakthrough T1D gefinancierd, hebben wetenschappers nu het tegendeel ontdekt. Onder andere prof. dr. Martin Gotthardt van het Radboudumc onderzocht dit.<\/p><p>Nieuw onderzoek in Amerika toont nu aan dat de b\u00e8tacellen in de alvleesklier veel flexibeler zijn dat we dachten. Bij dit onderzoek met jonge muizen met type 1 diabetes, is namelijk een nieuwe mogelijkheid naar voren gekomen. Het verlies van insulineproductie, door niet werkende b\u00e8tacellen, werd bij de muizen opgevangen doordat deltacellen zich herprogrammeerden tot insulineproducerende b\u00e8tacellen.<\/p><p><strong>Andere taak<\/strong><br \/>Deze deltacellen zijn normaal verantwoordelijk voor de productie van een specifiek hormoon genaamd somatostatin. Nu blijkt dat deze cellen zich dus kunnen omvormen tot insulineproducerende cellen. Ze nemen dan als het ware een andere taak op zich.<\/p><p>Dat dit mechanisme is aangetoond, laat wederom zien hoe flexibel de alvleesklier is \u00e9n dat dit orgaan veel flexibeler is dan wetenschappers tot voor kort dachten. Het zal echter nog lang duren voordat mensen profijt hebben van deze ontdekking. Daarvoor moet dit resultaat eerst vertaald worden naar het menselijk lichaam.
