Wetenschappers zoeken dan ook naar mogelijkheid om de Eilandjes van Langerhans of de b\u00e8tacellen van dieren te transplanteren in mensen.<\/p><p>Hierbij moet een afstotingsreactie van het afweersysteem voorkomen worden. Aan de Ludwigs Maximilians Universit\u00e4t in M\u00fcnchen boeken wetenschappers grote vooruitgang op dit gebied. Men gebruikte hierbij genetisch gemodificeerde varkens die b\u00e8tacellen met het eiwit LEA29Y hebben. Dit eiwit is belangrijk, omdat het de afstotingsreactie kan voorkomen.<\/p><p>De onderzoekers transplanteerden de b\u00e8tacellen bij muizen met diabetes met een vermenselijkt immuunsysteem. Bij de groep muizen ontstond geen afweerreactie.
