Het eiwit, genaamd Islet Homeostasis Protein (IHoP) wordt gevonden in glucagon producerende cellen in de alvleesklier. Bij gezonde mensen word veel IHoP in deze cellen gevonden, maar bij mensen met T1D niet. Dit wijst erop dat IHoP een belangrijke rol speelt bij de regulatie van de balans tussen insuline en glucagon.
